　　Commenting on the announcement by the Competition and Markets Authority that it is to launch an inquiry into the banking sector, Stephen Ibbotson, Director of Business at ICAEW, said:

　　“It is right that the CMA is conducting a full-scale investigation into the business lending sector. If the economic recovery is to be sustainable, fast-growing firms need access to finance to push them to the next level and enable them to expand further. It would be beneficial if this inquiry was to look at the advice that lenders offer, so that prospective borrowers can make strong applications and lessen the chance that they will be rejected.

　　“More needs to be done to make SMEs aware that there is a great deal of choice out there. Most head straight to their bank without researching the market. Recent data has shown that first-time appliers are more likely to be rejected for finance, so the right advice is critical. ICAEW’s recently published Business Finance Guide demonstrates that there are a number of alternative routes to obtaining funding, and forms of business finance other than bank debt often suit fast-growing firms better.

　　“There are a number of concerns around business finance, but it is also important that businesses seek the right advice before applying. If they are to make the right choice for their business, it is crucial that this inquiry does not over-complicate the market, otherwise SMEs will struggle to understand the alternatives on offer.”
