　　CGA-Canada will pursue a strategy of increasing its market share within the accounting profession by attracting high-potential students, offering a professional designation that combines the best technical skills, the highest level of professionalism and the crucial leadership skills required to succeed.
 

　　The Accountants Coming to Canada website hosts a self-assessment tool for foreign-educated accountants and graduates. The tool provides a preliminary evaluation of their education against the criteria required for CGA qualification. Information about program content, location of courses, and next steps to register for the program are also available.
 

　　Since October 2011, the site has had more than 40,000 unique visitors. Some 18,000 visitors have used the self-assessment tool. The website was established with, and continues to be supported by, federal funding through Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC).
 

　　CGA-Canada and CPA Australia renewed their mutual recognition agreement (MRA) until 2018. The agreement, first signed in 2008, offers members greater international recognition and professional mobility.
 

　　Nearly 60 CPAs have become CGAs, and more than 125 CGAs have become CPAs, under the terms of the MRA.
 

　　CGA-Canada signed a gift agreement with the University of Ottawa’s Telfer School of Management. The 2012-13 grant to the CGA-Canada Accounting and Governance Research Centre funded research in accounting and related areas.
 

　　A study released by the Centre in January found that the recent global financial crisis had little impact on the risk disclosures of non-financial Canadian firms. The finding suggests that investors examining changes in risks faced by non-financial companies in 2007-08 would have been at a loss to anticipate the decline in market values in that period.
 

　　Options to Attract More Academics

　　In May, CGA-Canada launched the first Online Senior Academic Program (SAP). The program is designed to attract high-profile academics to CGA membership.
 

　　Nine academics from across Canada participated in the SAP by completing a combination of individual and group-case analyses. Candidates also participated in weekly simultaneous discussions, led by an experienced facilitator. Through the SAP, candidates demonstrated and were assessed on the competencies required of a newly certified CGA.
 

　　The online program is tailored to the academics’s busy schedule and can be done from anywhere. In fact many candidates participated from various parts of the world, where they were conducting research or attending conferences.
 

　　As a result of this inaugural program, these additional academics are becoming CGAs. Research indicates that the designation of an instructor has a strong influence on the choice of designation of the student, so CGA academics are highly valued.
 

　　Four students in the CGA program and 10 newly certified CGAs were recognized by CGA-Canada for outstanding academic achievement in 2011-12.
 

　　Each year the Association recognizes exceptional academic performance by awarding: the CGA-Canada Awards of Excellence, the ENCON Group Inc. Insurance Public Practice Award, the Porter Hétu International Award, and the Top Ten Recognition Awards. The recipients were featured in a full-page colour advertisement in the national edition of The Globe and Mail in late October.
 

　　Awards of Excellence are presented to the highest academic achievers in each level of the CGA program. Award recipients in program levels one to four receive $1,000, and the professional level award winner receives $1,500. The 2011-12 recipients were: LevelⅠ, Lindsey Brown (Man.); LevelⅡ, Na Xie (Sask.), LevelⅢ, Steven Dengin (B.C.); Level 4, Wei Jiang (Hunan, China); Professional Level, Devin Ball-Bene (Ont.).
 

　　The Top Ten Recognition Awards honour newly certified members who rank as the leading performers across the association based on the average of their PACE Level examinations. The 2011-12 recipients were: Tommy Chun Ho Ng (Ont.), Bing Hu (Alta.), Susan Ong (Ont.), Devin Ball-Bene (Ont.), Vivi Yeung (B.C.), Donna Ryan (N.S.), Wenqi Zhou (Ont.), Patricia Horobec (Alta.), Oxana Borzdyko (Ont.), and Yanyi Zhang (B.C.).
 

　　Ms. Horobec also received the ENCON Group Inc. Insurance Public Practice Award, worth $5,000, having achieved the highest average mark in the public practice career option. Additionally, she captured the Porter Hétu International Award, worth $1,500, for attaining the highest final course mark in Advanced External Auditing and achieving a standing of honours in the Issues in Professional Practice examination.
 

　　Alexandra Korneshuk and Lindsey Brown, two students in the CGA Program, and Susan Chau Ong, a newly certified CGA, are featured in a series of videos describing why they chose CGA and their hopes for the future. The videos can be viewed on CGA-Canada’s YouTube channel.
