　　Tax Simplification Message Gains Traction

　　In December, CGA-Canada hosted a national Summit on Tax Simplification with representatives from business, academia and government. The approximately 60 participants agreed the tax system had become unduly complex and not kept up with societal trends.

　　Key recommendations included establishing a process to study and develop options to simplify the tax system. This could involve creating an independent commission, or providing resources and support to the Parliamentary Budget Officer and parliamentary committees. Recommendations to simplify compliance were also made.

　　Late in the fiscal year, the Technical Tax Amendments Act, 2012 became law. As a result, hundreds of draft tax measures that had been stuck in legislative limbo, some of them for over a decade, were enacted. The Association had been advocating for passage of the bill.

　　The Association also encouraged parliamentarians to establish a process to deal with technical tax amendments in a timely manner. This could include, for example, having the Minister of Finance introduce a technical tax amendments bill after each federal budget.
