　　Citing a recent Pollara research poll which indicates that Canadians are looking for government leadership in accounting standards reform, the president of Canada's second largest accounting professional association says a fully independent accounting standards setting body should be established in this country.
 

　　Appearing before the Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce today, Guy Legault, President and Chief Operating Officer of the Certified General Accountants Association of Canada (CGA-Canada), noted that Canada is only one of two advanced economies in the world, where accounting standards setting and oversight resides within the confines of one professional accounting organization.
 

　　"The Enron affair has given us an opportunity to reform how we set and monitor accounting standards," said Mr. Legault. "Canadians are telling us that they are very concerned that a major corporate failure of similar scope and impact could happen here in Canada. The time has come for a full and open public debate about these issues."
 

　　The Pollara poll, commissioned recently by CGA-Canada, indicates that nearly three quarters of respondents who report being aware of the Enron failure, believe a similar corporate scandal is likely to occur in this country.
 

　　CGA-Canada also used the Senate presentation as an opportunity to reaffirm its long-standing position that Canada should adopt international accounting standards, those of the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB). "Canada has an important leadership role to play in the development and adoption of high quality and globally accepted international accounting standards," noted Mr. Legault.
 

　　In his Senate presentation, Mr. Legault referred to one of the poll's findings which indicates that Canadians are three times more likely to state a preference for adopting international accounting standards than those of the US (58 per cent versus 17 per cent respectively).
 

　　During his remarks to the Senate Committee, the CGA-Canada President announced that his organization has commissioned a study of new and innovative ways to establish and enforce accounting standards. CGA-Canada has asked the Ottawa-based Centre for Collaborative Government to examine possible models that could be used to set, apply and enforce accounting standards in Canada. The study's results will be made public.
