CGA Awards Recognize Top Academic Achievement
The Certified General Accountants Association of Canada (CGA-Canada) congratulates recipients of its student awards recognizing outstanding academic achievement for the 2006-07 academic year. The 18 awards were presented to 17 new CGAs and students at provincial admission to membership ceremonies.

Slavka Batchvarova of Toronto, Ontario, is the recipient of the ENCON Group Inc. Insurance Public Practice Award, valued at $5,000. It is awarded to a newly certified CGA graduating from the public practice career option who achieves the highest average mark on the Advanced External Auditing, and Advanced Personal and Corporate Taxation examinations.

Leah MacKenzie of Victoria, B.C. is the winner of the Porter Hétu International Award, which is presented to a newly certified CGA graduating from the public practice career option who obtains the highest final course mark in Advanced External Auditing. Hua (Amy) Chen of Toronto is the recipient of the Carswell Taxation Award, recognizing the student who earns the highest mark in Advanced Personal and Corporate Taxation.

Awards of Excellence are presented to the highest academic achievers in each level of the CGA Program of Professional Studies. Jennifer Bond of Victoria, who also received a Top Ten Recognition Award, won the Award of Excellence for the Professional Level. Other Award of Excellence recipients are Seshadri Hariharan of Markham, Ontario (Level 4), Mark Millham of Regina, Saskatchewan (LevelⅢ), Elizabeth Thurlow of Maple Ridge, B.C. (LevelⅡ), and Natalia Shuklina of B.C. (LevelⅠ).

The Top Ten Recognition Awards honour newly certified members who rank as the highest performers across the country. This year’s recipients are: Jennifer Bond (Victoria), Francis Favre (Toronto), Rianto Halim Tanudiredja (Coquitlam, B.C.), Mike Merkens (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan), Libing Li (Richmond, B.C.), Ramona Bortnowschi (Edmonton, Alberta), Ryan Premak (Edmonton), Weijie (James) Luo (Guelph, Ontario), Eddy Cheung (Hong Kong), and Liliana Villa (Mississauga, Ontario).

“These awards recognize truly outstanding academic achievement,” said Ron Colucci, FCGA, Chair of CGA-Canada. “Most students in the CGA program work full-time in demanding positions of responsibility. It takes tremendous personal discipline and commitment to achieve such impressive academic results while balancing career and family obligations.”

“While these awards pay tribute to exceptional performance, the winners are also representative of the high standards that all CGAs must meet,” said Anthony Ariganello, CPA (DE), FCGA, President and CEO of CGA-Canada. “This commitment to high standards is maintained throughout a CGA’s entire career. CGAs complete mandatory annual professional development and adhere to a strict code of professional conduct that promotes the highest measure of professionalism and ethical integrity.”
