National opinion poll indicates continuing Canadian concern about Enron fallout, while pointing to positive role for government in leading reform.

Information from a national opinion poll released today shows that while a vast majority of Canadians maintain trust in the accounting profession, 73 per cent of those who are familiar with the Enron story, believe that a similar business failure remains likely in Canada.

The poll was conducted between May 1 and May 8, 2002 for the Certified General Accountants Association of Canada by the national polling company Pollara Inc. Survey results indicate strong support for a government role in facilitating post-Enron reforms and leading a public policy discussion about the implications for Canada (45 per cent of respondents indicated that government has a key role to play).

The Pollara research was released prior to an appearance before the Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce by Guy Legault, President and Chief Operating Officer of CGA-Canada. The poll indicates that many Canadians surveyed (42 per cent) now feel more vulnerable personally as potential investors, because of the Enron scandal.

"We are extremely pleased that the Senate Committee has chosen to undertake a broad public consultation on this important issue," said Mr. Legault. "Canadians continue to be very concerned about this matter and are looking for national leadership in preventing such a disaster from happening here in Canada."

The poll also revealed that a significant majority of Canadians who participated in the poll (58 per cent) favour the adoption of international accounting standards over those of the United States (17 per cent). "This is an important finding," notes Legault. "It suggests that many Canadians may have come to understand that American accounting rules and a US-style regulatory environment, are not appropriate for Canada."

CGA-Canada has argued since 1999 that Canada should adopt international accounting standards, those of the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) rather than move closer to US accounting standards. The association is also urging the establishment of a fully independent accounting standard setting body in Canada, one not directly tied to any professional accounting body.

Highlights of the poll are available online. Guy Legault is scheduled to appear before the Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce at 11:45 am, Thursday, May 30th. Hearings are held in Room 505, Victoria Building, 140 Wellington Street, Ottawa.

Results from this study are based on telephone interviews conducted with a random sample of 1,659 Canadians 18 years of age and older between May 1st and May 8th, 2002. The overall results are accurate to within ±2.4%, nineteen times out of twenty.
