As is illustrated in the chart, the number of Chinese impoverished population is roughly 100 million in 2012, around 55 million in 2015 and approximately 16 million in 2018. Apparently, the number of Chinese impoverished population has been on a dramatic decline over the past few years.
What accounts for the decline? From my perspective, at least three factors contribute to the change. To begin with, the change is closely related to the rapid development of Chinese economy and the rising income of the Chinese people. More importantly, the change has a lot to do with the abundance of employment choices. With the increase of job opportunities, more and more citizens can find jobs to support themselves and their families, which is a sustainable way to shake off poverty. Finally, the change is enhanced and promoted by the government’s bettering policies such as funding and education supports to the poor.
With the development of society, the downward trend is bound to continue for a couple of years in the future. As far as I am concerned, it’s a positive trend and should be encouraged since it is beneficial not merely to Chinese citizens but to the whole society.
